This Wasn't Plagiarism---exactly...
What happened was they needed a Summer Replacement Show for "The Shadow" so they turned to Walter Gibson (aka "Maxwell Grant") who had taken the creepy show host of that name and turned him into the crime-fighter we know and love and said "Help!" And it was HE who created the Avenger. So it's hardly a rip-off or plagiarism or any of that when it's the same guy writing both.
Yes, both shows are quite similar and that was intentional. They had a formula that worked. Why change it and lose ratings in the Summer was the reasoning behind that.
(The Ghost Murder episode is particularly good)

Imitation is the sincerest form of plagiarism...
The Avenger was a ripoff of the Shadow. For those who collect OTR shows, you might like to know that most of the Shadows programs are still under copyright. This isn't true with the Avenger.
Listen to both shows and compare the little differences in each.
It's not as good as the Shadow, but it's still fun.
